Can You Overdose On Delta 8 THC?

With advanced extraction methods, scientists have managed to extract the other isomer of the Delta 9 THC molecule, which grows in small amounts in the Cannabis plants: Delta 8 THC.

You can’t typically overdose on THC, but you will experience severe side effects when consuming a large amount of Delta 8 THC. Some of the side effects include red eyes, slow reaction time, coordination issues, and dry mouth.

Like Delta 9, Delta 8 THC can have stimulating effects, but studies show that Delta 8 THC is less stimulating than Delta 9 THC.

Read further our detailed analysis to dive deeper into Delta 8 THC, the possibility of overdose, and the implications.

Can You Overdose On Delta 8 THC?

Some consumers think that cannabis is just as risky as opioids or stimulants, while others believe it is safe with no possibility of overdose.

While there is little research done on Delta 8 THC, no information is provided regarding overdosing with Delta 8.

However, the National Cancer Institute stated that overdosing does not occur since cannabinoid receptors are not found in the brainstem areas responsible for respiration.

According to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC), you experience enhanced side effects when consuming too much cannabis.

It should be noted that both the NCI and the CDC mentioned cannabis and cannabinoids, thus including Delta 8 THC.

Common symptoms related to overconsumption include:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Dry mouth
  • Slower reaction rates
  • Coordination issues
  • Uncontrolled vomiting

Therefore, it is recommended that you ask your doctor for your recommended Delta 8 THC dosage.

How Much Delta 8 THC Do You Have To Take To Overdose?

In humans, there is no fixed LD50 for cannabinoids (which includes Delta 8 THC) as it depends on the way it is consumed and the person taking it.

The LD50 or the lethal dose (LD) needed to kill 50% of test subjects is first determined by researchers.

The results are then used to determine the possibility of overdose.

According to a report from StatsPearls in 2020, inhaled cannabis doses greater than 7.5 mg/m2 in adults lead to severe repercussions, while an oral dose of 5 to 300 mg in children results in severe side effects.

The authors also state that LD50 estimates are not available for humans due to clear ethical reasons.

Since Delta 8 THC is part of the cannabinoids spectrum, it is assumed that high concentrations of Delta 8 THC do not cause overdose but lead to serious side effects.

In contrast, the WHO stated that the LD50 for Delta 9 THC is assumed to be 4g for a 70kg human adult.

They also concluded that it is highly unlikely that such a high dose can be consumed when ingested, smoked, or vaporized.

More research has to be done to come up with solid evidence about Delta 8 THC.

How Long Does Delta 8 THC Stay In Your System?

Although it has slight psychoactive effects compared to Delta 9 THC, this does not mean that Delta 8 THC will not remain in your system for as long.

According to a study from the NCBI, approximately 80-90% of THC is excreted out of your system within five days.

However, THC residuals stay in the fatty tissue of the body for some time.

Another study from the Drug and Alcohol Dependence Journal found THC metabolites in the urines of chronic cannabis smokers for up to 24 days after last use.

Yet, both studies analyzed the performance of Delta 9 THC and not Delta 8 THC as there is not enough research done for Delta 8 THC.

Additionally, age, body mass index, and gender will have some role in the time the body will take to break down THC.

It should also be noted that Delta 8 THC may be flushed out of the body faster if there is high consumption of water, regular physical exercises, and a high fiber diet.

However, flushing methods must be used with caution as you may also remove essential electrolytes from your body.

Does Delta 8 THC Have Side Effects?

Just like any substance, taking too much Delta 8 THC will have side effects.

As in Delta 9 THC, with Delta 8, there are also side effects associated with the consumption.

Yet, it is worth noting that consumers reported less feeling of a high than when taking Delta 9 THC.

Typical side effects of taking Delta 8 THC will generally include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Red eyes
  • Low blood pressure
  • Slower reaction rates
  • Coordination issues and confusion
  • Loss of memory

In extreme cases, we may see:

  • Uncontrolled vomiting
  • Motion sickness

Moreover, cannabis use could potentially be addicting and harmful to your health, according to the Journal of Addiction Research & Therapy report.

While no study has shown overdosing consequences from Delta 8 THC, there is a possibility that users can develop a cannabis addiction.

In contrast, Delta 8 is found in trace amounts when smoking cannabis.

Therefore, the link between Delta 8 and cannabis addiction is not yet confirmed.

The dilemma above is one example of why more study is needed to confirm the effects and toxicity of Delta 8 THC.

Is Delta 8 THC Safe?

While high consumption will have adverse effects on your health, low doses of Delta 8 THC can be safely taken.

Delta 8 is milder, but both THC provide relaxation, concentration, and improved moods among users.

The compound has appetite-stimulating and relaxing properties, according to the National Cancer Institute

Delta 8 may therefore help to increase appetite and relieve motion sickness among consumers.

Many people believe that Delta 8 provides a smoother, less anxiety-inducing psychoactive experience than Delta 9.

It also appears to have additional therapeutic benefits, such as improved pain relief, although these claims have yet to be proven in clinical trials.

Whether Delta 8 THC is safe depends on the way it is viewed and consumed by cannabis users.

However, it is better to seek professional advice before embarking on the Delta 8 THC journey, as the compound may impact other drug treatments you are following.
